The Slaton High School CDE teams for Meat Judging and Nursing/Landscaping competed in the State CDE contests Friday (April 26).

The Nursery/Landscape CDE contest “encourages members to apply their landscaping, marketing, and service skills as they complete a written exam, identify various landscaping plant materials, and evaluate plant materials and landscape plans,” said teacher Casey Jones. There is also a portion of the contest over problem-solving where the students have to read, evaluate and perform calculations for materials from a landscape design drawing.

For Meats Judging, teacher Adam Westbrook said students are able to name retail cuts from beef, pork and lambs.

“They grade beef carcasses for quality and yield. They have to study information about foodborne diseases, meat storage and handling,  meat cookery, food storage and handling, meat nutrition, legislation and history, animal care and handling, and purchasing meat,” he said.

Competing in Nursery/Landscape were Rayleigh Rodgers, Presley Alford, Scarlett Chancey and Xavier Lopez, with Piper Rose as  alternate, while in Meat Judging competing were Olivia Newcomb, Wesley Rose, Kenon Diaz and Brayden Ricketts.
