Storytime with Mayor Shaw

On Friday morning (June 7) at Slaton City Hall, a group of young kids and their parents gathered for Story Time with Mayor Clifton Shaw, which was hosted by the PBS Texas Tech Public Media group with representative Reagan Doyal.

Doyal showed the kids one of the shows available on the PBS app while they waited for the story time to begin. Then, as a surprise for the gathered children, Doyal introduced Curious George, explaining that he traveled all this way to see them. Each kid was very excited with bright smiles on their faces as Curious George was standing in the room.

Mayor Shaw approached the front of the room and began reading a Curious George book, which was about George’s birthday.

Doyal announced to the kids that the reason George came was to celebrate his birthday with them, and the room sang Happy Birthday to George.

Doyal then played a brand new PBS show called “Lyla in the Loop,” highlighting the free features and content of the PBS app. The episode featured a dance called ‘the carrot cake dance,’ and when the show ended, the whole group performed the dance.

Doyal encouraged the kids and parents to gather PBS resources that would help with learning and starting school for Pre-K and elementary aged children.

Before the end of the story time, the children lined up to take pictures with Curious George.
