City Council Meeting

   The Slaton City Council met on August 12, 2024, at the Slaton City Hall, beginning at 6:30 PM and adjourning at 8:57 PM. Key actions included the approval of previous meeting minutes and a public comment from Mrs. Jones about the need for striping on 20th Street. Financial updates were given, noting a decrease in interest rates, and these reports were approved. Department reports highlighted significant progress in public works, including ongoing street repairs and meter replacements in the water and sewer department, with completion expected by the end of October. The police department reported 44 animal control intakes and 62 police reports in July, aiming to expand the force to 10 officers. Zoning and code enforcement saw increased case openings with strict enforcement and fines for property violations.

   The lake water level is currently at 76 feet, with plans for future usage from Lake Meredith. Infrastructure projects are ongoing, with a focus on street repairs and drainage improvements, despite challenges in housing development. The SEDCO budget was approved, including a $60,000 incentive for Double F Manufacturing, and a balanced budget for 2023-2024 was presented. Various agreements were approved, including, Resolution #081224A a resolution adopting the Lubbock Emergency Communication District Budget fire suppression with Lubbock County, cyber liability, water conservation plan and drought contingency plan for the City of Slaton, and data breach response, an employee assistance program with Texas Tech, an agreement with Jacob & Martin, LLC for the Slaton Library Renovation project, cornerstone for the Slaton Senior Center, and  a request for Hotel/Motel Tax money. A library renovation project is scheduled for completion in 2026, and $58,000 was allocated for the Larry T. Neal Memorial Airport resurfacing project.

   The meeting concluded with the approval of the FYE 2025 Proposed Operating Budget and FYE 2024 Property Tax Rate, emphasizing infrastructure improvements, economic development, and public services.
