Slaton ISD School Board Meeting

  By:Jenna Howle

The Slaton Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees held its regular meeting on August 13, 2024, beginning promptly at 7:00 p.m. and concluding by 8:00 p.m.

The meeting kicked off with public comments, where John Gatica was the sole speaker.

They took the opportunity to introduce new staff members in the SFA, CTE, and High School departments.

In athletics, it was reported that 32 seventh graders and 35 eighth-graders have joined the junior high football program. The sixth-grade class also saw a strong turnout, with 40 students participating. Equipment handouts have been completed, and the program is already showing significant progress compared to last year. Notably, no injuries have been reported during the rigorous two-a-day practices. The football team is scheduled to have a scrimmage against Ralls at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, which promises to be a good test of their skills.

On the facilities front, the sewer damage repair project is progressing well and is expected to be completed by September or October. Additionally, sound improvements are underway at the High School Football Stadium, ensuring a better experience for spectators this season.

Safety remains a top priority for SISD, with the installation of a new security system across the schools. This initiative is part of the district’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a secure environment for students and staff.

In academics, the board highlighted the increasing number of students taking advantage of dual credit opportunities. The district is also proud to have two early graduates who will be completing their studies in December, along with one junior who will graduate with the senior class this year.

Routine business included the approval of the minutes and financial reports, all of which were passed without issue.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m., with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation for the upcoming school year.
