By: Jenna Howle
The Slaton ISD Board met on September 10, 2024, at 7:00 p.m., and began the evening with a series of recognitions. Students of the Month from each school were honored, with special mentions for Arthur Kelly (CTE), Adriana Gonzales, Xavien Brisono, and Meador Barbee. These students were celebrated for their outstanding achievements, with support from Slaton Bakery.
During the public comment segment, two community members shared their perspectives and concerns, which the board took into account.
The board reviewed the latest enrollment report, noting both the total student numbers and recent transfers. In athletics, the football team’s excellent start to the season was highlighted, marking one of their best in years. Board members encouraged the team to continue their hard work. Junior High football games have begun, and cross-country is also active, with the first two meets scheduled for Saturdays.
Facility updates included the installation of a new backflow prevention system and the completion of the Slaton Basketball Arena. Upcoming improvements at Tiger Stadium will feature a new sound system installation scheduled from October 28 to November 5. Safety and security updates were discussed, including ongoing door upgrades and plans for new fencing.
A new safety app will assist with door checks once the upgrades are complete.
The board approved the minutes from the regular meeting on August 12, 2024, and the special meeting on August 30, 2024, along with the financial and expenditures report. The next board meeting is set for October 8, 2024. Additionally, the community is invited to the CCMR and Red and Black Day event at Mount Olive Church on September 22, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.
