The Slaton High School football team showcased resilience and determination in their victory on Friday night, September 6th. Despite an initial slow start attributed to a weather delay, the Tigers rallied to secure a win that highlights their improvements on both sides of the ball.
The game began under less-than-ideal conditions, with the weather delay seemingly impacting the team’s rhythm. Coach Clint Conkin acknowledged the sluggish start, noting, “I thought we started off slow due to the weather delay. After the first couple of series, we woke up and played better.”
Once the team adjusted to the conditions, Slaton’s performance took a turn for the better. The defensive squad, in particular, stepped up significantly from previous outings. The Tigers’ defense was relentless, creating three crucial turnovers that proved to be game-changers. “I thought we got better on the defensive side this week,” Coach Conkin said. “We caused three turnovers, which is huge.”
On offense, the Tigers showed promise but have room for improvement. Coach Conkin expressed satisfaction with the execution but also pointed out that there is still work to be done. “We executed well on offense but need to improve on that side of the ball,” he said.
Looking ahead, Slaton faces a significant challenge next week against New Deal. This upcoming game will serve as a key test for the Tigers, providing a benchmark to gauge their development and readiness for the remainder of the season.
Coach Conkin is optimistic but recognizes the importance of the upcoming matchup. “Overall, I was pleased with the performance. We play New Deal this week, which will be a good test to see where we are at.”
As the Slaton Tigers prepare for their next opponent, the team’s recent victory offers a mix of encouragement and areas for growth. Fans and supporters are eager to see how the team builds on this momentum and addresses the challenges that lie ahead.
