SHS track teams earn honors at Area meet

Girls Track

The Tigerettes won an Area championship in track this week, with six athletes advancing to Regionals to compete in seven different events.

Ta’kaja Robinson won an individual Area championship with a jump of 35 feet, 8.5 inches, while Ti’Alice Young came in second with a jump of 34 feet, 11.5 inches. Robinson also took home an Area championship in the long jump with a jump of 17 feet, 1.5 inches, all advancing to Area in their respective event.

Xazari Naylor advanced to Regionals with third place finish in the 100-meter dash and a time of 12.95 seconds, and Robinson also advanced in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 24.98 seconds.

Alice Cogburn advanced to Regionals in the 3200-meter run, coming in fourth with a time of 13 minutes, 12.5 seconds. Aryanna Zapata narrowly missed out on a regional appearance in the same event, coming in fifth with a time of 13 minutes, 20 seconds. Cogburn also gained points for the team in the 1600-meter run, coming in sixth with a time of 6 minutes, 27 seconds, although she did not advance in that event.

A team of Kamryn Gibbs, Zanady Coronado, Xazari Nayor and Ta’kaja Robinson took home Area championships in both the 4×100 with a time of 49.04 seconds and 4×200 with a time of 1 minute 44.49 seconds, advancing to Regionals in both events.

Boys Track

The Tigers track team took home runner-up in last week’s Area track meet, winning Area championships in four events, with six athletes advancing to Area in six events.

Quevon McDaniel took home an Area championship in the triple jump, advancing to Area for his efforts.

Kevondrick Gober won a district championship in the 100-meter dash and Zephron Ortiz came in third in the 200-meter dash with Ta’Shawn Tipton coming in fifth in the 200-meter dash, barely missing out on a regional appearance.

Malachi Mendez advanced to Regionals in the 110-meter hurdles, coming in second, while he also gained points for the team in the 300-meter hurdles with a sixth place finish, although he did not advance in that event.

In the 3200-meter run Zach Gonzales came in seventh while Ty Kinch placed eight.

In the relays, a team of Eli Martinez, Zephron Ortiz, Ta’Shawn Tipton and Kevondrick Gober won Area championships in both the 4×100-meters and 4×200 meters and advanced to Regionals.
