Tigerette Softball earns Lone Star Varsity honors

The Regional Quarterfinal champion Slaton Tigerette softball team continues to earn honors, ranking in the top 10 Lone Star Varsity honors in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal super team.

The team placed fifth in the rankings, released in the June 23 edition of The Lubbock Avalanche Journal.

“The Tigerettes (28-11) capped off a record season with an appearance in the Region I-3A semifinals. Kamryn Gibbs bounced back from a torn ACL and teamed with newcomers Madi Englund and Sam Gatica to power the deep run that included two run-rule postseason victories,” was reported in the article.

In addition to the team honors, Madi Englund, Kamryn Gibbs and Sam Gatica earned individual honors.

Englund, a freshman, was named Newcomer of the Year. She played third base.

She was the District 2-3A Newcomer of the Year, and was the Lone Star Varsity female athlete of the week March 9 when she hit a grand slam in the Area round against Kermit.

She finished with a .474 batting average, with four home runs, two triples, 49 runs, 76 RBIs and 15 walks. Englund only had two strikeouts the entire year.

Junior Gibbs, a shortstop but came back this year after her injury to have 15 doubles, six triples and 10 home runs. She had a .566 batting average, going 69 for 122. Gibbs had 67 runs and 52 RBIs with 13 stolen bases. Like with Englund, she only had two strikeouts during the season. She has been a two time LSV super team pick.

Freshman outfielder Sam Gatica was named LSV second team. She had 11 home runs, two triples, 11 doubles, 49 RBIs and 68 runs, complimenting a .469 batting average this season. She was a District 2-3A first team pick and LSV Player of the Week after a 5 for 5 game against Idalou March 23. She also had only three defensive errors on the year and six assists from outfield.
