The Slaton High School Tigerette Basketball team has started off strong in their season, defeating Patton Springs 80-33 in Tuesday’s (Nov. 12) game and again winning against Lockney 58-46 Friday (Nov. 16).

Head Basketball Coach Tiffany Potts said the team was busy in the pre-season to prepare for a better year. “The Tigerettes worked hard this summer to improve their fundamentals.  We attended a team camp at Abilene Christian University and participated in a weekly shooting camp during the summer,” she said.

“This team is committed to doing whatever it takes to be successful and has spent a significant amount of time this summer and preseason in the weight room, on the track and in the gym shooting.”

That training showed in their first game of the season, shooting 54 percent from the floor against Patton Springs.

Potts said the team is composed of seven seniors and 10 players who all have seen varsity minutes in previous years. “We feel like depth is one of our strengths this year that will allow us to play an up tempo game with multiple players contributing,” she said.

In the first game, Potts said  all nine players who were healthy to play scored.

“Our senior leadership is exceptional. Kamryn Gibbs led the way with 15 points followed by Zanady Coronado and Jazmyn Jackson with 13,” said Potts.

“On Saturday, we played at Lockney and saw TK Robison lead the way with 13 points followed by Jazmyn Jackson and Mary Jo Parker with nine.  The balance this team has and the ability for multiple players to score will be a strength as the season progress.”

The team will continue its season this week at the Spur Tournament.

Potts said they will play games against Spur, White Deer, Tahoka, Hale Center and New Deal.

They will then travel to the Fantasy of Lights Tournament over the Thanksgiving break.

The boy’s team has not started its season, but have played a few scrimmages as well. Their first regular season game was Nov. 19 at home against the Andrews Mustangs. The girls will also play there on the same day.A recap will be in next week’s edition.

Both teams will then play Valley there Nov. 25 beginning at 4 p.m.
