The Roosevelt Eagles’ impressive eight game winning streak was broken when they lost 28-12 to undefeated Abernathy Friday evening (Oct. 23).

That said, Head Coach Matt Landers had nothing but positive things to say about both his team and the Antelopes.

“Abernathy is a good team with good players. They made more plays than we did in crucial moments. Our defense did a great job keeping us in the game,” he said.

Still, there was as always room for improvement.

“I need to do a better job as the Head Coach to prepare our players for games and a better job coaching our kids on offense,” added Landers.

The team had strong performances defensively and offensively.

“Jacob Torrez, Alex Trevino and Kenyon Taylor were standouts on offense and JJ Diaz and Alex Trevino were standouts on the defensive side of the ball,” said Landers.

“It’s a team effort and I’m proud of their effort, the team never quit or gave up, they kept fighting till the end.”

Now the team will face the Coahoma Bulldogs Friday evening (Oct. 30) in Coahoma.

Landers said this game will  be a true test of their team’s strength. “This is where our culture of Band of Brothers sets in. We are a brotherhood and one game does not define our season or who we are as a team,” he said.

“As a coach this is my responsibility to get the players ready to go and I didn’t do a good job of that last week. I’m going to learn from my mistakes and do a better job this week.”
