The Roosevelt Eagles came back from a slight stumble in their playoff quest to defeat the Coahoma Bulldogs 26-20 in a tough District match. The team is now 3-1 in District.
Head Coach Matt Landers was impressed with how his team bounced back from their first loss of the season to the Abernathy Antelopes on Oct. 23. “Our kids played very well and came out with a victory on the road against a really good Coahoma team who only had one loss on the season,” he said. “I’m proud of the way they handled adversity throughout the game and we are excited to get a win.”
Alex Trevino had 137 yards rushing with two touchdowns on offense. Jacob Torrez had 103 yards rushing with one touchdown and Kenyon Taylor had 50 yards rushing with a touchdown.
“Offensive line were the outstanding players on offense. On defense we had big plays made by JJ Diaz, Kenyon Taylor, Calvin Murphy and Jacob Torrez as well as Thomas Sanchez who was our leading tackler,” said Landers.
Defensively, Thomas Sanchez had 10 tackles and one fumble recovery; JJ Diaz, nine tackles; Alex Trevino, nine tackles; Jacob Torrez, six tackles and Calvin Murphy had two tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.
The team will now face the undefeated Idalou Wildcats Friday (Nov. 6) for their last District game.
Landers is looking forward to and preparing for the tough match. “We are going to prepare for Idalou the same way we prepare for every game,” he said. “They are a really good team who are well coached on both sides of the ball. We are looking forward to the challenge of playing Idalou this week because we want to be an elite team like that and the only way to be an elite team is to compete with those elite teams.”
Game time is 7:30 p.m. at home.
