The Roosevelt Eagles had a tough match in the Idalou Wildcats Friday (Nov. 6) to end their District play.

The Eagles lost 42-21, but Head Coach Matt Landers couldn’t have been more proud of his team fighting to try and defeat the undefeated team.

“I was proud of our kids the way we played against Idalou. We were down by 28-21 with seven minutes left in the game,” he said. “Idalou is a solid team all around and congratulations to Coach (Jeff) Lofton, his staff and team for winning the District Championship.”

Roosevelt finished third behind Idalou and Abernathy. Also advancing out of District 3A-4, Division 2 is Coahoma.

Top players on offense for the Eagles were Alex Trevino, who had 137 yards rushing and one touchdown and Jacob Torrez, 67 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

On the defense, JJ Diaz had 10 tackles, Alex Trevino nine tackles and Jonathan Rivero 11 tackles.

The team now prepares to play the Spearman Lynx this Friday (Nov. 13) at 7 p.m. in Amarillo River Road in the Bi-District round of playoffs.

Landers said he is looking forward to the Eagles playing the team and is hopeful to advance to the Area round.

“Spearman is a good team that has a lot of speed. They do a great job of getting their athletes the ball in space,” he said. “It should be a good challenge for us to try and contain those athletes.”
