The Slaton Tigerettes received an early Christmas present Tuesday (Dec. 22) when they defeated the Abernathy Lady Lopes 45-39 during District play.
The Tigerettes are 1-1 in District.
Head Coach Tiffany Potts couldn’t be more proud of her team in the victory. “Abernathy was a big District game for our team. I was so proud of the girls for coming out ready to play, working together as a team and executing the game plan we had put into place,” she said.
“Abernathy plays very good defense so we knew we would need to take care of the ball and play good defense also.
“We knew free throws would make the difference in the game and we shot 76 percent from the free throw line with seven different players going to the line,” she added.
Lead scorer was Andrea Moreno who had 17 points on the night.
“Andrea Moreno stepped on the offensive end scoring 17 points. She was able to be aggressive in the paint and also step out and hit some outside shots too,” Potts said.
Other top scorers were Justyne Zapata with seven, Mary Jo Parker with six, Natali Soto with five, Payton Potts and Sam Gatica with three each and T’Alice Young and Emma Muniz with two each.
But it wasn’t just scoring that helped them win. “Defensively, it was a great team effort but Samantha Gatica and Justyne Zapata were challenged with guarding Abernathy’s top two players most of the night and they did a phenomenal job,” she added.
The team had no other games during the week due to the Christmas break.
They played Littlefield Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 29) in Littlefield. Scores will be published in next week’s edition.
Littlefield is a non-District game, but Potts said it will help them prepare for the rest of the season.
“Littlefield is a well coached athletic team that will prepare us for the rest of our District schedule in January,” she said.
“It will be good to get some of the holiday rust off with one game before we resume District play in a very tough District.”
